Position Summary:

Experience:

Four years commercial/naval sheet metal experience (must have 4 years of Ship yard experience) as a first class Sheet Metal Worker in the installation of foundations, ventilation, bulkheads, shipboard furniture and sheet metal fabrication shop work. One year of formal training may be substituted for one year of work experience, pending coordinator approval.

 

Required Skills and/or Qualifications:

1. Ability to comprehend complex ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, and sketches to include weld symbols, material types, datum and reference lines.

2. Ability to comprehend fractional and decimal dimensions as with the use of a ruler.

3. Ability to layoff piece parts for fabrication and assembly.

4. Ability to assemble piece parts in accordance with specifications in a quality manner.

5. Experience working in a physically demanding environment.

6. Familiarity with OSHA regulations relative to the shipbuilding industry.

All Sheet Metal Workers will be required to pass a single-pass Fillet Welder Qualification test, using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)(Stick) Process upon reporting for the first day of work. Test will consist of both Vertical Up (3F) and Overhead (4F) positions with a Single-pass Fillet. Each pass shall have at least one stop and start within the weld length. This position is located in Newport News, VA and work will be performed at a facility of a major defense contractor. Employee will help build warships such as combatants, submarines and aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.

 

Must have three (3) or more years of experience as a marine, commercial nuclear, or petro/chem First Class Pipe Fitter.

 

Must have an ACTIVE DOD Clearance.

Pipe Fitting consisting of fitting various materials such as steel, cooper, copper-nickel and stainless along with the appropriate valves and fittings utilizing various tools and equipment in accordance with drawings, arrangements and blue prints. Tack welding, Read and interpret ship piping blueprints, Fit carbon steel and copper nickel pipe, end prep piping by hand and/or with Wach or Portsmouth Machine, Some knowledge in installing pipe hangers, sketch and bend TFW piping (2 ½ inch and below), Braze and tack weld, able to fit X-ray, hand prep J and B bevels, ability to bend pipe from template and in the use of a hand bender, prep and fit-up EB rings, prep and fit-up backing rings, clean cut/break pipe with grinder. Pipe fitters are responsible for installing these complex systems together on the ship and in the shop must able to read and interpret blue prints, fabricate and install pipe systems of all types of materials and sizes, cut, prep, and test this is new construction of Navy ships. The Pipe Fitters will be fitting pipe consisting of various materials such as steel, cooper, copper-nickel and stainless along with the appropriate valves and fittings utilizing various tools and equipment in accordance with drawings, arrangements and blue prints.

 

 

Candidates must pass a criminal background investigation that goes back seven years and a hair follicle drug test.
